When it comes to insulation, you’ve probably heard of fiberglass and spray foam. Maybe even R-value. But have you heard the term “blanket insulation”? This type of insulation is actually installed in many homes. Find out more in this blog post!
Blanket Insulation: The Basics
As the most widely available type of insulation on the market, blanket insulation is a common way to improve energy efficiency in a home. It consists of roll or batt insulation and is often made from fiberglass, though mineral wool, plastic, cotton and sheep’s wool are other available materials.
Standard fiberglass blankets have a thermal resistance value, or R-value, of R-2.9 to R-3.8 per inch of thickness. High-density blanket insulation is also available at R-3.7 to R-4.3 per inch. This is a good choice if space is at a premium since compressing fiberglass causes it to lose effectiveness.
To achieve the recommended R-49 to R-60 of attic insulation, you need at least a foot of fiberglass—more if you choose a less efficient variety. Since fiberglass blankets come in 3.5- to 12-inch thicknesses, plan to install at least one or two layers of insulation on the attic floor.
Blanket insulation comes in long sheets rolled up for easy transportation and storage. Precise widths are designed to fit between joists, studs and rafters that are built to code. The snug fit makes blankets easy to install, and you can cut each piece to the length you need to fit any wall height or floor width.
Depending on the application, you may want to choose blanket insulation with special features, such as vapor barrier or flame-resistant facings. Keep in mind that un-faced blankets are still the best choice if you’re adding insulation to an existing layer, which you might do to boost attic floor insulation.
Benefits of Blanket Insulation
Whether you’re choosing insulation for the unfinished walls in your new home or you want to add another layer to your attic floor, blanket insulation could be the right pick if you want to enjoy these benefits:
- Reduced utility bills from heightened energy efficiency
- Better indoor comfort
- Lower moisture infiltration to reduce mold growth
- Low cost per square foot
